The Thirteenth International Workshop on Low Temperature Detectors - LTD 13 (AIP Conference Proceedings)

These proceedings are broadly of interest to many research areas which utilize low temperature detectors for measurements. These include photon sciences at synchrotron radiation facilities, neutrino physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics, dark matter searches, sub-Kelvin cryogenic refrigeration systems, novel detectors or astrophysics from millimeter wave bolometers, to single photon energy and time resolving from near-infrared to ultraviolet optical detectors, through the highest spectral resolution x-ray and gamma ray detectors, to large mass detectors for dark matter searches. These applications include particle phyisics, astrophysics, materials physics, and security non-proliferation, and cryogenic engineering. This thoroughly peer-reviewed proceedings of the Thirteenth International Workshop on Low Temperature Detectors provides a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in low temperature particle and radiation detectors. In 173 original research papers from 233 distinct presentations, the physics and applications of this extremely high performance type of detectors is described in detail, including their application to such diverse fields as astrophysics at all wavelengths from the submillimeter to gamma-ray, dark matter searches, neutrino astrophysics, atomic physics, nuclear physics, biophysics, and materials science.

We've talked about distance already but another demonstration of fan love is the dedication we show to bands and music is when it's pouring or snowing or when the festival we're at suddenly turns into a giant mudpit.

I've had my fair share of nasty rain at festivals and as a photographer who has made such an investment on camera equipment, it only seems natural that I'd have a sudden increase in anxiety and rush for a platic bag or poncho to throw over my gear, right? Pitchfork Music Festival 2008 was like that in the beginning of one of the days there and Jay Reatard's set was especially drenched. It seemed to rain for most of the whole day Lollapalooza 2009 on Friday and it got so bad I couldn't find one dry spot to wipe off the wet film on my lens.

I've had some pretty turbulent experiences getting to certain shows, too. I biked back 35 miles from Monotonix in practically a hurricane during Dark Lord Day last year. Whenever I'm doing something David Byrne related, there is bound to be a storm accompanying me on my bike ride. There was also a really stormy Fall show I went to once. There was also the time I camped out in front of the Vic Theater on a freezing January day in 2008 just to get a good spot to photograph (there wasn't a photopit for that show) only to find that the photopass list wasn't actually ready until after doors were open, which meant that for most of the show, i was stuck behind people who hadn't suffered through horrifically low temperatures. (thankfully, the publicist let me shoot a song or two from the side of the stage).

I'd say my runner up experience is the night that I shot Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Aragon and got *3* flat tires between biking there and then biking to The Empty Bottle for this Norwegian band I Was a King. I've never felt so alive in my life, though and man was I thankful when the Tamale Guy paid me a visit around midnight.

MGMT show on June 18th, 2010 kind of takes the cake. It was too unsafe for me to even try biking. The Riviera Theater, where they were playing, is about 7 miles one way. I biked there just this past week for Guided by Voices and actually do around 20-30 miles of biking around the city every day so that isn't a problem but I didn't even feel safe driving because the weather was so bad. To make matters worse, I couldn't even find a route off of my own side street with power lines and trees smashed into cars and overflowing onto the streets everwhere. It's almost like there wasn't an escape route. It stormed so heavily and all at once that flooding occurred in my neighborhood too and my only safe option was the Metra train but even just getting there (2 miles away) took an act of God. The power was out for several hours, too, but luckily by the time it came back on most of the food in my refrigerator hadn't spoiled. It was the last day of the 2009-2010 school year and so I was completely exhausted but I love their album Congratulations so much I probably would have taken my chances and hitchhiked there if I had to.

Anyhow, I'm sure you all have your exciting stories of the times you didn't quite escape treacherous storms during festivals and trying to get to and from shows. Go ahead and tell me your best one!

This picture was arranged by Kronquist and shot by one of his aides. He found that his camera shutter 'froze' in 50-below-zero temperatures, due to the thin film of oil normally used. He had to get a new shutter lubricated with graphite.
